Background of the Study

Stock market volatility refers to fluctuations in stock prices over time, driven by factors such as economic instability, political events, market speculation, and global financial trends. The Lagos Stock Exchange (LSE), Nigeria's principal financial market, plays a critical role in channeling investments and supporting economic growth. However, volatility in this market significantly influences investor behavior, often triggering emotional responses and speculative activities.

Understanding how volatility affects investor decision-making is essential to developing strategies that enhance market stability and investor confidence. Recent events, such as inflationary pressures and exchange rate fluctuations, have heightened volatility in the LSE, emphasizing the need for empirical analysis (Central Bank of Nigeria, 2023).

This study examines how stock market volatility impacts investor behavior in the Lagos Stock Exchange, exploring patterns of risk aversion, portfolio adjustments, and speculative trends.

Statement of the Problem

High stock market volatility creates uncertainty, deterring investments and increasing market inefficiency. In the Lagos Stock Exchange, volatility has led to erratic trading patterns, reduced market participation, and frequent capital flight. Despite the significance of this issue, limited research has explored the behavioral responses of investors to such volatility.

By addressing this gap, this study aims to provide insights into the behavioral trends of investors and propose strategies to mitigate the adverse effects of volatility on the market.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To analyze the relationship between stock market volatility and investor behavior in the Lagos Stock Exchange.
  2. To evaluate the psychological and financial factors influencing investor responses to market volatility.
  3. To propose strategies for minimizing the impact of volatility on investor confidence.

Research Questions

  1. How does stock market volatility affect investor behavior in the Lagos Stock Exchange?
  2. What factors influence investor decision-making during periods of high market volatility?
  3. What strategies can improve investor confidence in volatile market conditions?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Stock market volatility does not significantly influence investor behavior in the Lagos Stock Exchange.
  2. Psychological and financial factors do not significantly affect investor decision-making during market volatility.
  3. Strategies to address market volatility do not significantly improve investor confidence.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on investor behavior in the Lagos Stock Exchange from 2015 to 2025. Limitations include difficulties in capturing subjective behavioral data and potential external factors influencing market trends.
